Aura Technology celebrates International Women’s Day

As the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day, Aura Technology is redoubling its efforts to encourage gender diversity within the tech sector. Georgina Hobbs, a Second-Line Support Engineer at Managed Service Provider (MSP), Aura Technology, offers her insight into her daily routine and why she’d like to see more women in the sector.

Georgina has been an integral part of the Aura Technology team, which is headquartered in Totton in Hampshire, for over two years. She works part of the week at the service desk and the other part out on-site. Her day kicks off with essential administrative work, a flurry of emails and tickets to tackle, and the occasional escalation to address. She’s all about proactivity, touching base with customers for updates, or silently resolving issues behind the scenes.

The heart of her day lies in the pending tickets – those waiting for attention. Georgina approaches each one with determination, whether it’s reaching out to customers, making a quick call, or immersing herself in troubleshooting, depending on the nature of the problem. But Georgina isn’t confined to her desk. She’s out and about two days a week, working closely with one of Aura’s key customers. Her role is twofold – she provides on-site support at the customer’s office. She lends her expertise to a Technology Roadmap project, Aura’s signature methodology for producing entirely bespoke IT strategies for organisations.

The Technology Roadmap is an all-inclusive evaluation and analysis of your business’s in-house and third-party existing technology infrastructure. Georgina is all about innovation and efficiency, helping clients refine their processes and ensuring everything is up to date, from devices to firmware. If necessary, she even hops over to their various sites to lend a hand where needed.

During quieter moments, Georgina invests her time in self-improvement, poring over training resources on Pluralsight to enhance her skills and knowledge. She also contributes to Aura’s documentation library and is eager to share her wisdom with the team.

Team spirit is essential for Georgina. She regularly checks in with her colleagues, extending a helping hand when they’re swamped with tickets or offering guidance when a complex issue stumps them.

Georgina’s favourite part of her job is the customers. She said: “Building a relationship with the customers is incredibly rewarding. One of my customers has even invited me to a Christmas meal. Plus, the constant learning – no two days are the same.”

More women are joining the sector, but it’s still predominantly a male-led industry; Georgina admits she’s often met with surprise. “I guess the main reaction, as you can imagine, is the fact that I’m female. There aren’t many of us in this industry.” Aura is invested in ensuring more talented women like Georgina find jobs with them.

Addressing the misconceptions around IT, Georgina offers her perspective: “I feel a lot of people think that it’s all about being stuck in front of laptops, especially when working on the desk. But other exciting facets exist, like engaging with customers face to face. I used to do more customer-facing visits as a field engineer, but it’s nice to have different experiences within the company.”
